Uses for sphagnum moss

We supply compressed, compacted sphagnum moss in commercial quantities.

Sphagnum moss in this form is easier to store and much more economical to ship. Many of our large Commercial Orchid Growers now routinely order Moss in compressed 5 Kg packs. They receive quality moss and attractive cost savings.

We have also designed new Super-Compressed Packs in 150 gm, 500 gm, and 1 Kg Packs that allow our Retail Customers to take advantage of the concept.

Once received, the Moss is simply soaked in water for a few hours (Watch it Expand!) and then used normally for your Growing Operations. The ultimate in compaction application is with our Starter Squares and other unique custom squares and circles that suit some customers who wish to add our Sphagnum Moss to their Mixing Machines. Another application is in rectangular thin sheets, for lining Planter Boxes, and of course in our Hanging Basket Liners.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE BEST USES OF SPHAGNUM MOSS

We are committed to satisfying our customers requirements. We want them to succeed. This policy has lead to the successful diversification of how our golden sphagnum moss is currently used.
Originally sphagnum moss was used by the Chinese to grow orchids. During the First World War it was reportedly used as a substitute bandage dressing on wounded soldiers where the naturally sterile nature of the sphagnum moss assisted the healing process. More recently the orchid industry world wide has re-discovered the benefits of sphagnum moss.
We have adapted the packaging and presentation of its golden sphagnum moss so that it is now much more economically efficient to use in a wide range of horticultural end uses, not just orchid production.

BELOW ARE 6 INTRIGUING END-USES FOR OUR GOLDEN SPHAGNUM MOSS

(1) SPHAGNUM MOSS AND ORCHID PRODUCTION

moss-china02.jpgIn Asia it is generally recognised that Golden Sphagnum Moss is a most suitable growing medium for orchids. It allows the orchid roots to breath whilst at the same time keeping the orchid roots moist. Thus moss reduces the risk of disease in these most precious orchid plants.

In ancient China it used to be that only the Emperor could own an orchid plant. No matter who had grown it, they never owned it and the Emperors servants could come and call for it at any time. It was regarded as a very high honour indeed for the Emperor to claim an orchid that you had bred and grown.

The Japanese have perfected the art of growing phalaenopsis orchids in golden sphagnum moss. However the availability of moss for orchid production on a commercial basis has always been limited. Japan used to have home grown sphagnum moss available, but over time this has been picked out and never recovered in commercial quantities.

arrangeDuring the time Japan invaded Korea and parts of China sphagnum moss was available from these areas but after the Korean war in 1954 these areas became unavailable.

During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s golden sphagnum moss was found in New Zealand and the industry flourished, exporting mainly to Japan. This moss was found in Chile during the mid 1980’s and the Chilean industry became established soon after.

Now Chile is a recognised supplier of quality golden sphagnum moss for orchid production and exports to many countries throughout the world. Costs of production in Chile are very competitive and therefore golden sphagnum moss produced by us is a very cost effective orchid growing medium.

We have a long history of producing a very stable attractively presented golden sphagnum moss of the highest quality suitable for orchid production.

(2) GOLDEN SPHAGNUM MOSS LEAF FOR SPHAGNUM PEAT-BASED SOIL MIXES

products-leaf02We have discovered that the addition of golden sphagnum moss LEAF to sphagnum peat based soil mixes greatly improves the characteristics of the soil mix.

The addition of up to 40% by volume of golden sphagnum moss LEAF to peat based soil mixes helps to prevent the tendency of the peat moss to compact, increases the friability of the mix, increases the water holding capacity of the mix, which reducing the need to irrigate so frequently.

We can now supply you small quantities of moss leaf for your home and hobby plantings.

All these benefits improve the growth rates of most seedlings including vegetable and baby orchid plants as well as reducing the per cubic metre costs of the growing mix and the overall production costs.

Golden sphagnum moss LEAF can hold up to 20 times it own weight in water which allows the seedlings access to water without causing excessive watering, or wet feet, to damage the seedlings. Golden sphagnum moss LEAF is also a naturally sterile medium so it has a natural tendency to suppress bacteria diseases and improves seedling health.

(3) GOLDEN SPHAGNUM MOSS LINERS FOR HANGING BASKETS

uses-hanging - CopyHugely successful and low cost Flowering Hanging Baskets can easily be achieved now that we produce the Golden Sphagnum Moss Hanging Basket Liners. They are so easy to use. Just fold the golden sphagnum moss LINER into your hanging basket and add your choice of top quality peat soil mix. Plant your plants of choice and THEN water the whole basket, LINER and all. Always do the watering last, after planting. DO NOT wet the golden sphagnum moss LINER before planting.

The added benefit of golden sphagnum moss LINERS is that you can have INSTANT COLOUR and INSTANT SUCCESS by SIDE PLANTING the golden sphagnum moss LINER. Side planting is so easy, truly, just place the LINER in your hanging basket and cut the side wall with a knife in the side wall in the shape of a “x”. Insert your plants, through the middle of your cut, roots first from the outside of the basket pushing the roots in towards the centre of the basket. Repeat the process five or seven times depending on the size of your basket. Then plant the top of your basket.

uses-hanging02 - CopyINSTANTLY you will have a basket with flowers on the top as well as flowers all around the sides. INSTANT COLOUR. Then just water your golden sphagnum moss hanging basket.

Golden sphagnum moss hanging basket liners LOOKS natural because they are NATURAL. Golden sphagnum moss LINERS hold water naturally, up to twenty times its own weight.

This is the secret to the success of the hanging basket which uses the golden sphagnum moss liner. The flowering plants use a lot of water while they are flowering and the golden sphagnum moss LINER provides a natural water reserve for the plants during this time, reducing the stress on the flowering plants and making it easier for you to keep the hanging basket flowering for a long time.

(4) COMPRESSED SPHAGNUM MOSS PRODUCTS

uses-machine - CopyDuring the past 20 years or more, most End Users of Sphagnum Moss have considered it very important that the Moss Fibers be received in a dried, loose pack, so that the fiber is not broken and the Leaf not crushed.

This meant that most “traditional”Moss packs contained loosely packed fiber, and therefore were very light and bulky. Which made the Freight Costs high, since a typical Sea Freight Container would be extremely light and well under the allowed weight.

We have made many attempts to reduce costs, conducting numerous trials with different levels of compressed moss. We have been delighted with the results. Our Sphagnum Moss is extremely resilient and capable of re-hydration after being compressed. This has allowed us to move to heavier 5 Kg Bulk Packs with the subsequent lower freight costs that save you, our Customer, money!

In addition, the compact Moss is easier to store, and much more economical to ship on to other customers. Many of our large Commercial Orchid Growers now routinely order Moss in the compressed 5 Kg Packs, because they are delighted with the quality outcome and the cost savings available.

We have also designed new Super-Compressed Packs in 150 gm, 500 gm, 1 Kg Packs that allow our Retail Customers to take advantage of the concept.

Ask for more information if you have a special requirement.

(5) OUR NEW "STARTER SQUARES"

squares-held - CopyThese STARTER SQUARES usually are supplied in small Square or Rectangular Shapes, measuring 3 x 4 cm or 4 x 4 cm, and with a thickness of only 2 Millimeters.!

They are very popular with Orchid Growers who take Baby Orchids from the Propagation Flasks and place directly into small plastic trays (50 or 72 cells per tray).

They find their TIME is reduced, they use a STANDARD AMOUNT OF Sphagnum Moss in each cell, and in the long run, their IRRIGATION PROGRAM is enhanced because all cells have nearly the same amount of Sphagnum Moss! This gives them MORE FLEXIBILITY with their workforce and ELIMINATES ERRORS in planting technique. PLANT HEALTH is better, GROWTH RATES are improved, and SURVIVAL is higher!

squares-dry - CopyBy the way, we can make these Compressed SQUARES in any size you wish, to meet your particular Cell Size and/or planting program. Just give us your details and let us find the right size and weight for you!

To plant the Baby Orchids, remove 2 STARTER SQUARES from their Pack, and consider them as the “bread” in a sandwich. Then remove a Baby Orchid and hold it between the Squares at the proper level, so that when the Sphagnum Moss later expands, the root system is enclosed by the Sphagnum Moss.

Then, with 2 fingers, hold and dip the “sandwich” into warm water for 3 seconds, and then immediately place into the Planting Cell Tray, and maintain the proper position for another few seconds while the Sphagnum Moss expands.

squares-wetIt’s as simple as that!

A short time of practice will allow your employees to become “expert” in this technique. We have many Orchid Specialists who are happy with this product ask us for references!

Finally, since they are so Compact, we can easily ship to you in small quantities, by Air Express, direct from Chile. Click to order.

(6) SPHAGNUM MOSS IN AIR LAYERING OPERATIONS

uses-air02 - CopyOne of the more novel and clever uses for Sphagnum Moss is as the “media” in producing new Plants by the very old system of Air Layering. This is useful for a variety of Plants, including Citrus Trees, Ficus Trees, etc. If you are doing Air Layering, then sphagnum moss can work for you!

Sphagnum moss is naturally sterile. This means it's great as an "air layering" media because it suppresses diseases naturally.

The first step in the process is to choose a nice branch for a potential plant, and irritate and damage the Bark of the mother plant. Then perhaps apply a bit of rooting hormone. Then, immediately, take a handful of Wet Sphagnum Moss and wrap it around the damaged area. Following that, wrap Aluminum Foil around the Sphagnum Moss to hold it in place. This simple technique(shown in the photos) finishes the preparation of the “rooting application” pack.

During the following weeks, the packs can be watered individually or with overhead sprayers…( to keep the Sphagnum Moss moist…) during which time the new roots begin to form. By monitoring root development, you can then cut the original mother plant stem just below the pack, and …MAGIC!….. you have a new Plant.

Our short fiber 3 STAR Sphagnum Moss is the perfect choice for this operation. In addition, we can make you special Compressed Sphagnum Moss “patches”, say 4 x 4 Inches, or whatever you like, and you can use those in a similar way to our Starter Squares for baby Orchids. Give it a try for your production! You’ll Like It! Contact Us if you have ideas or questions.
